Our chickens roam the back of the farm freely accompanying sheep and llamas. The chickens have a diet that mainly consists of fruits and vegetables that come from the farm itself. The Chickens, because they are outside, will eat most organic matter whether it is grass hay or worms. Due to the fact that the winter months in New England can be a particularly harsh enviornment, preventing any organic crop to be sustained, we have to supliment the chickens diet with small portions of grain. Because of how we feed the chickens you may notice that the shells are sometimes harder than those you will find in the grocery store, you can also note that the eggs have a much darker yoke. Some of the larger commercial egg producers will try to fool customers into believing that their chickens are free range by feeding them marigolds to darken the yoke and crushed oyster shells to harden the eggs. We however, do not do any of that and you can really taste the difference.

As with the chickens, the treatment of our sheep, and all of our animals is far surperior to the animal welfare practices of large factory farms. The sheep feed on the grass from our two pastures and in the fall, after the apple season has passed, they graze throughout the entire orchard. The past few years while establishing the flock, we did not have the proper pasture needed to support them so their diet consisted of a great deal of bread from local bakeries. This spring marks the first full year we have not had to use bread as a part of the sheep's diet. The clearing of the second pasture has allowed them feed solely on grass and hay. The only non-pasture part of their diet is the homemade grain that we make, which contains whole grains such as oats, corn and wheat in combination minerals the sheep need periodically throughout the year, especially during pregnancy. The sheep are completely steroid and antibiotic free. The fact that our sheep are grass fed and not pumped full of chemicals makes our freezer lamb some of the freshest and healthiest you can get.

• Meat from grass-fed animals is lower in fat than meat from grain-fed animals, it is also lower in calories.
